Overhead Fibre Management

We operate with major stakeholders to safely work at height and around HV power cables to upgrade, maintain and install new fibre cables on the UK’s overhead networks.

Our aim is to always work to the highest safety standards, operating with the latest training and technologies, including de-wrapping machines and drone technologies, for surveying.

We work with stakeholders including National Grid to ensure compliance is achieved on all projects and we’re qualified to climb towers, operate on National Grid land and within the substation compound.

Our engineers are also highly trained fibre experts and work closely with our planning, design, cabling and civils crews to offer a ‘total’ option in the management of overhead fibre on HV networks.

Sub-stations

We are able to enter and run fibre cable into major substations in line with HSEQ requirements

National Grid Case Study: SkyWrap Fibre Deployment Bull’s Lodge

A suggested solution to provide fibre optic connectivity to Bulls Lodge Substation. John Henry Group engineers proposed the solution utilised specialist overhead fibre optic wrapping machinery on the 4VB 400KV pylon route that crosses the dual carriageway A12 and one of the main east Anglian railways. John Henry Group specialist overhead engineers proposed connectivity utilising the earth wire of the 400kv route to cross the A12 and mainline railway with fibre optic SkyWrap.

Specialist knowledge used:

  • Able to climb to 400kv tower peak
  • National Grid NSI4, 6, & 8 HSG47, Competent person to hold safety document
  • Production of project plan, RAMs, scope of works, utilising PRINCE2 methodology
  • Overhead fibre-optic jointing expertise – NG Person/CP OHL
  • Utilising the John Henry Group noticing department and central shared services division to place requests into highways agency
  • John Henry Group civil engineers to install U/G fibre optic cable to base of the HV tower for connectivity

Outcome:

  • Completion of the project within the stringent two week deadline
  • Working relationship with National Grid overhead lines
  • Designed engineered solution bespoke for client
