John Henry Power | John Henry Civil Engineering

John Henry Power and John Henry Civil Engineering were tasked with the 33kv installation for Visser & Smit Hanab, to upgrade three sub-stations in Cambridge city centre. This high profile project required extensive liaison with local councillors, highways, and representative groups throughout the 7km route. Some parts of the route involved excavating through very narrow and congested streets with residents parking bays, which was achieved with virtually no complaints from the public.

The route also involved crossing one of the busiest junctions in Cambridge twice – as much of the route had a dual trench, one on each side of the road, to enable horizontal separation of the power cables. These sections all had traffic management, and the sequencing of works had to be planned and executed precisely to achieve the client’s timescales.

Working in a high profile area, which included the part crossing of Jesus Green, a historic city centre park and of high amenity value to the Cambridge public, considerable planning, care and expertise was required to make the poject a success, without causing visual interferenace in this historic city.

On top of this there was also  significance from an archaeological perspective. The work was executed in close consultation with the Cambridge archaeological survey team, with planning of the route to avoid areas of known importance and ancient remains.

Working in conjunction with Visser & Smit Hanab to provide our expertise and knowledge as a business partner, John Henry Group was able to identify the location of joint bays was selected to enable 1000metre pulls of the 33Kv cable. This meant that the duct that was laid had to be of a high standard with a smooth as-laid profile. By reducing the number of joints required, costs were reduced, and disruption to the public minimised.

The work was completed on time and within the client’s budget, accompanyed by significant praise from our partner, Visser Smith and Hanab. Calling on significant project delivery skills, experts from John Henry Power and John Henry Civil Engineering were able to complete our client brief in four months, without disruption or visual interference.
